HAPPY THANKSGIVING
This week, America celebrates Thanksgiving. Families gather to watch football and the Christmas parade. It is a time for turkey and dressing, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. It is a chance to reflect with gratitude for our loved ones and so many other blessings.
Growing up in Canada, my family always celebrated Thanksgiving in October with my mom’s sister and her family. They made the road trip from Regina to Prince Albert. My dad and my Uncle Joe and all the boys watched football. Part of the Rider Nation, they cheered on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
We girls were underfoot in the kitchen while my mom and Aunt Bernice were busy with the turkey and all the trimmings. I remember the intoxicating smell of the turkey roasting. The sound of the mixer whipping cream for pumpkin pie. The smell of the pot of coffee that was set to perk just before we Sat down for dinner. My dad carving the turkey.
I was so fortunate to have that the large, loving family and today, I am grateful for those memories. I have a special awe for my mom, Amy, and all my aunts, Phyllis, Bernice, Verna, and Norma who made many happy holidays for us throughout the entire year. They raised their families and loved and supported us all.
To all our American readers, I want to wish a very happy Thanksgiving filled with joy and wonderful memories to carry forward.
